Machine Embroidery Stabilizers

Machine embroidery backing, also known as a stabilizer, is crucial in achieving high-quality embroidery results. Its primary function is to provide support and stability to the fabric both during the embroidery process and, in some cases, for the garment's life. Backing keeps the fabric smooth and stable during the embroidery process, preventing issues such as puckering, shifting, distortion and poorly formed stitches. Choosing the right backing is essential for the overall professional appearance of the embroidery and long-term durability of the finished design.

Key Points:

Types of Backing: Machine embroidery backings come in various types, each serving distinct purposes based on fabric and design requirements.

  • Cut-Away Backings: provide permanent support, making them essential for stretchy knit fabrics or lightweight wovens. A high-quality cut-away backing not only supports the fabric during the embroidery process but also maintains the integrity of the embroidered design through multiple launderings throughout the garment's life. Cut-away backings should be used on unstable and lightweight woven fabrics such as sweaters, fleece, sweatshirts, t-shirts, polos and lightly-woven dress shirts. The excess perimeter of cut-away backings are trimmed away with scissors close to the edge of designs after embroidering.
  • Tear-Away Backings: are designed to support the fabric during embroidery and prevent shifting of the material in the hoop during stitching. These backings are best used on stable woven fabrics without stretch like canvas, duck cloth, denim and twill and will eventually wash away. They should be used only when the fabric can support the design after embroidery, since the tear away backing is not intended to remain with the embroidery throughout the life of the garment. After stitching, the excess tear-away is gently pulled away from around the design, leaving minimal remaining backing.
  • Wash-Away Backings: dissolve completely in water, making them ideal for fabrics that need to remain soft and flexible. Examples of wash-away backings include Vilene, cut-away wash-away, and heavy water-soluble films. They are recommended for creating Free Standing Lace (FSL) or embroidery on towels, linens, and other items where no residual backing should be visible on the reverse side. Excess wash-away backing is first trimmed away with scissors and any remaining pieces are removed with gentle agitation in warm or hot water.
  • Heat-Away Backings: Like wash-away backings, these films provide temporary support during the stitching process, but are removed by the application heat instead of water.. Excess material can be perforated with stitches and torn away, with any remaining backing dissipating with the use of an iron, hair dryer, or heat gun. Heat-away backings are excellent for In-the-Hoop (ITH) projects, emblems, patches, and badge making. Lighter-weight heat-away films can also be used as a topping or stabilizer for delicate water-sensitive fabrics and items.  They are also ideal for drapery and upholstery projects.

Having the appropriate machine embroidery backing on hand is vital for achieving professional machine embroidery. By selecting the correct type of stabilizer based on fabric, design, and application needs, you ensure that your embroidery maintains its shape, outlasts the garment, and enhances the overall quality of the finished piece.
