  • What exactly does it mean when it says colorfast on your Classic Rayon card?

Colorfast means having color that is resistant to fading or running. For best results when laundering, wash in warm water with mild detergent. Do not add bleaching agents such as chlorine, peroxide or sodium carbonate. The care symbols on the back of the card state: Machine wash, very hot (up to 95 degrees C; 203 degrees F). DO NOT BLEACH. Iron, steam or dry, with medium heat. Use any solvent except trichloroethylene.

  • What should I do if the color runs on to my garment?

If the first laundering of a new garment is done in cool or cold water, leftover dye particles from the thread may remain on the fabric. Rewash in warm (toward the hotter side) water. The remaining particles will wash out. This may have to be done more than once. Be sure NOT to dry the garment in a dryer between washings while trying to remove the remaining particles.

  • How do I embroider with metallic threads?

The type of thread you are embroidering with will determine the needle size you will need. Loosen the tension discs. This will allow the thread to flow more freely through the discs and help prevent thread breakage and fraying. Set the machine at slower speeds. Higher speeds will cause friction. Experiment with the speeds until you find the one that runs most smoothly. Work with your digitizer to make sure your designs are specifically for metallic threads.

  • What is a non-woven backing?

Most backings are Non-woven. According to The Textile Institute, Non-wovens... are textile structures made directly from fiber rather than yarn. Non-woven fabrics are usually made from continuous filaments or from fiber webs... strengthened by bonding using such techniques as: adhesive bonding, mechanical interlocking by needling or fluid jet entanglement, thermal bonding or stitching.

  • How do I decide which backing to use for my next project?

When choosing a backing, it is important to consider the weight of the garment and the softness or crispness desired. A backing should be slightly lighter in weight than the garment. If a backing is too heavy, it will weigh down the garment and distort the shape. Knitted fabrics and lightly woven fabrics do not have even stability and therefore must be embroidered using backing. Also included in this group are smooth fabrics such as satin. It is also important to consider the stability of the non-woven backing. If the garment material must be hooped, the underlying backing can have little stretch in any direction. If the backing stretches, the embroidery may appear puckered or warped.
