How to Choose the Correct E-Zee Backing

Backing provides the stability—literally, the foundation -- for your embroidery. How do you choose the right one? A logical approach is to study the “feel” or the “hand” -- the tactile nature -- of the garment or item to be embroidered. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Does it stretch out of shape? If it does, then it would need a substantial backing that will remain with the item.

  • Is it smooth (even “slippery”)? It may require an adhesive backing.

  • Is it textured? It may need a topping in addition to a permanent backing.

  • Will it have “interaction” (as a golf or tennis shirt)? A soft backing with a good hand may be in order.

  • Is it static, hung on a wall? A ?bold' backing will make it crisp and strong.

  • Is it heavy? A tough and durable backing is called for.

  • Is it delicate? A sheer mesh or weblon may be just enough.
