Creating 3D Embroidery with E-Zee 3D Foam

When you want to create loft or especially handsome satin stitch embroidery elements, using a 3-D technique with E-Zee foam is very effective. When creating new 3-D designs, look for art where you can use primarily columns to create most elements. Though foam can be used under fill areas, the outcome is less effective than satin column stitches. Using the simple steps described below for 3-D technique, give your embroidery designs extra pizzazz and dimension.

Design Creation (Digitizing)

  1. Establish appropriate embroidery settings.

  • Run Stitch length = 1mm
  • Satin density = 2.0 - 25 (the heavy density cuts and covers the foam)
  • 'Stretch' (pull compensation) @ 5 - 15% (depending on size of element).

  1. With a running stitch, create an outline of the shape to be embroidered in 3-D (the short stitch length cuts the foam).
  2. Create "end-caps" where needed. i.e. ('ends' of shape where stitches would not typically cover the foam). See Figure #1

Tip: If using 'keyboard lettering' (to create 3-0 text) move stitches- one-at-a-time, if necessary to prevent any/al/ center stitches that would lay down the foam.

Stitching with 3-D E-Zee Foam

Stitch underlay or outline stitches prior to laying down the 3D foam.

  1. Tape a piece of foam large enough to cover 3-D element size, inside hoop. Foam color should be similar to the thread color used.

  2. Stitch all of 3-D element. See Figure #2

  3. Remove foam from finished, stitched design. Foam will pull away easily. See Figure #3 and #4

  4. Design has great loft or three dimensional effect. See Figure #5
